A Closer Look at "Burning Pain" & Homeopathy

One of the most important nuances in homeopathy is defining symptoms from the homeopathic perspective.  It's usually not enough  to simply use general symptoms like "pain" or even "head pain" when choosing a single homeopathic remedy.   Drilling down and finding a more precise keynote can make all the difference in getting the desired healing response.  For example, there are many homeopathic remedies for pain, including Arnica, Ruta grav, Rhus tox, Bryonia and many more; but when you sharpen the keynote by identifying the type of pain, like "burning pain", it's a bit like finding the missing piece of the puzzle, and you get a substantially narrowed list of possible homeopathic remedies and increase the likelyhood of successful homeopathic treatment.

Taking a closer look at burning pain is slightly less challenging then many other types of pain, because it is more easily defined and understood.  What is burning pain?  Quite simply, it's pain that feels like burning.  It can happen in many different parts of the body: burning knee pain, burning hip pain, burning throat pain, even burning emotional pain.  When you consider the more specific keynote "burning pain" you find a unique list of homeopathic pain remedies - Belladonna, Apis mel, Cantharis and Causticum.

Causticum - Specializing in burning pain, Causticum relieves a range of joint, neck and back pains as well as burning, blistering skin eruptions and sharp tearing headaches. Burning raw throats and constant rattling night coughs mark its colds.

Waiting for the next shoe to fall? Causticum's emotional picture often includes anxious forebodings, long lasting or suppressed grief or a sensitivity or sympathy to the grief or injustice that others suffer with a tendency to think the glass half empty.

Apis mel - When choosing Apis mel or any remedy, you look for a certain pattern of symptoms that match the case: If Apis mel can help, the inflammation should be red, hot and swollen with burning, stinging pains which feel better with cold air or compresses and worse for heat. Apis’ other applications often accompany inflammation including: thirstless, acute burning fevers that are worse with heat or motion, nervous restless sleep with sudden starts, and intense throbbing headaches better for pressure and worse with motion. Whenever there are strong reactionary symptoms, it’s best to consult a licensed practitioner.

Cantharis - This one burns. Because of this pesky insect’s burning sting, its remedy has the ability to heal a wide range of minor burns and burning pains caused by anything from sunburns to scalding urine. Many tout its ability to prevent blistering if taken soon after minor burning– especially sunburns. As with most burning pains, Cantharis symptoms feel better with cold water (though you should never apply cold right away to a burn as the contrast causes more trouble). When scalded by hot tea, coffee or other beverages, tongues and throats can find quick, soothing relief in Cantharis.

Belladonna - Don’t underestimate Belladonna's throbbing and/or burning pains. As a homeopathic remedy it can quickly relieve dizzying, throbbing headaches that will not let you bend over. Its earaches can be equally sudden, throbbing, with red streaks. Red swollen joints with sharp throbbing pain can find comfort here, as can dry burning eyes, menopausal hot flashes, burning diarrhea, burning urinary symptoms, hemorrhoids, painful heavy periods, red hot spots from teething, sores or tonsillitis.

The Totality of Symptoms

The Law of Similars always comes first in homeopathy, but to make that work, symptoms need to fall within the range of the remedy.  In homeopathic provings, the specific types of pain (throbbing, radiating...), what makes it better or worse (heat, cold, movement...), and other details are all carefully recorded and verified for each remedy, along with all its other symptoms.
This individualization leads to homeopathy’s third principle, the Totality of Symptoms.

Remember, the remedies are not forcing chemical reactions the way other drugs do. The right remedy stimulates the healing response the body needs to overcome the symptoms and/or the cause of those symptoms. The wrong remedy often goes unrecognized. Thus careful review of the symptoms and careful selection is needed.

Combinations simplify selection by mixing single remedies with applications for a certain condition in hopes that there will be something in it for everyone. Even in our combinations, we generally offer more than one option for each ailment. For chronic pain, imbalance or illnesses, the best solution is to visit a homeopath who can sleuth out the very best match – the similimum.
