History Binds Mother's Day, Moms & Homeopathy

What mom wrote the Mother's Day Proclamation of 1870 to activate women against war (see below), penned the Battle Hymn of the Republic (1858) and was a staunch supporter of homeopathy and homeopathic education for women?

Answer: Julia Ward Howe (1819 – 1910)
She served on the board of the homeopathic New York Medical College which was open to female students, supported medical educational efforts for women and gave a poignant inaugural address for the homeopathic New England Female Medical College. Howe was a strong advocate for homeopaths, abolition, women’s suffrage, and education for women and black Americans.

Homeopathy Owes Much to Moms

Homeopathic institutions accepted women in their colleges in the US long before ‘conventional’ medicine. The first fully credited female physician, Elizabeth Blackwell, graduated in 1848. When the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania opened in 1850, Blackwell taught homeopathy to other women, including the first female African American physicians.

“By 1900, it is estimated that 12% of homeopathic physicians were women… Women auxiliaries raised large amounts of money to open many of the homeopathic hospitals and it was women, in their role of family caretaker, who were the lay prescribers introducing homeopathy to many communities.”

While it was Anna M. Jarvis’ work that gave us an official Mother’s Day in 1908, the groundwork was lain by Howe and her many suffrage companions. “Some members of the women’s suffrage movement were either homeopathic physicians or their patients [including Susan B. Anthony]. Dr. Susan Edson, a graduate of the Cleveland Homeopathic College, was personal physician to President Garfield.” (Sylvain Cazalet, homeoint.org)

Luyties 1-800-Homeopathy Owes Much to Moms

We know we owe our success to moms. It was moms and westbound families in the 1850s who pressed Dr. Luyties to make home remedies that they could use themselves.

Today, our records reveal that moms still make up the largest portion of our customers. We know moms are likely to order Teething Tabs #30, Arnica, Anxiety Depression #304 and Bioplasma, but what other remedies do moms like most? Let us know.

The Mother’s Day Proclamation Howe penned in answer to the carnage of the Civil War echoes in mother’s hearts today:

Arise, then, women of this day!
Arise all women who have hearts,
Whether your baptism be that of water or of tears
Say firmly:

"We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands shall not come to us reeking of carnage,
For caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of
charity, mercy and patience.

"We women of one country
Will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."

From the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with
Our own. It says, "Disarm, Disarm!"
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice!
Blood does not wipe out dishonor
Nor violence indicate possession.
As men have of ten forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons of war.

Let women now leave all that may be left of home
For a great and earnest day of counsel.

Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.

Let them then solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace,
Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,
But of God.

In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality
May be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient
And at the earliest period consistent with its objects
To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,
The amicable settlement of international questions.
The great and general interests of peace.

Have a Happy and Peaceful Mother’s Day!
