Backache #199 - Aconite, Arnica, Bellis per, Bryonia, Mag phos, Rhus tox

Keynotes: Back pain, Sore muscles, Spasms, Cramps, Sprains

For acute backache from exertion, minor injury, fevers, or just living, #199 can bring you the much needed relief you seek. If cold air aggravates your numb, stiff, painful, tingling or sore back/neck, Aconite will help you breathe freely. Arnica is the acute remedy for sore, aching, backs tired from jogging, driving, gardening, lifting or getting bruised. Bellis’ sore back is known as the “railway spine,” though it helps anytime deep tissues are aggravated or sprained, especially if a hot bath and a warm bed feel best. Bryonia specializes in neck and lower back stiffness aggravated by any motion, quick temperature changes or fever. The spasm stopping cell salt Mag phos is a must in any back remedy. When motion actually makes the stiffness improve, there is always Rhus tox, particularly if the floor makes a better bed than a mattress.

Backache #199- A recipe for relief

Praise for Backache/Sciatica#199
I was diagnosed with natural degeneration of the spine. I tried Luyties #199 and my back is wonderful compared to prior treatment.  With temperature changes my back and spine will be uncomfortable but without the help of these tablets I may not be walking and continuing daily life.

These Homeopathic Superstars Give #199

it’s Ability To Minimize Muscular Pain & Inflammation

Arnica Montana Leopard’s Bane

If this remedy were in every glove compartment, first aid box, purse, office, suitcase, gym bag, dugout... , countless hours of pain and aggravation could be saved. This premier first aid remedy has won many hearts to homeopathy by minimizing bruising, bleeding, swelling, shock, pain and recovery time following strains, injuries, dental work, surgery, childbirth, exercise... Even without bruising or obvious signs of injury after trauma, Arnica relieves the aftershock, soreness and pain that follows. A dose after every head injury is very highly recommended, but please call your practitioner even if it feels better.

Whenever backs are lifting and joints are twisting, Arnica can minimize the swelling, bruising and pain. Asa Hershoff’s perfect formula for sprains begins with Arnica. For broken bones (with a doctor’s guidance, Arnica given in the first stage can minimize the swelling and get you in the final cast much sooner. Once the bone is well set, low doses of Symphytum should take Arnica’s place. On the skin, Arnica can help bruises, minimize bleeding of cuts plus ease tender sore spots like boils, acne or blood blisters. For aches and muscles, Arnica can bring much comfort when a strong cough has your ribcage feeling sore, or a flu has your muscles aching. A dose before and after a workout can minimize the next day’s stiffness and help the muscles heal.

Though we all need Arnica, a few mental clues underline its importance in certain applications. In

cases of shock, physical or mental, Arnica is most important for patients who say, “No, I’m fine, don't touch me, I don’t need a doctor,” even when it is obvious they need help. Another indicator is when the whole body feels oversensitive, sore/bruised and does not want to be touched. Arnica can also help when injury or shock leads to nightmares and worry. The other key contender for shock, Aconite, is critical when shock brings on intense fear, anxiety and cries for help.

In short, Arnica is so important in minimizing trauma, especially in soft tissues, it needs to be available 24-7. We cannot underestimate its importance for everyone, pets included, and are pleased that it is finding its way into everyday care around the world.

Bellis Perennis Daisy

Acting on behalf of the muscular fibers of the blood vessels, this remedy helps deep muscular soreness with intense pain and intolerance of cold. When chilly food or drink make you feel worse, or a cold wind intensifies the pain, look into this remedy. W. Boericke, M.D., in his Materia Medica says “It is a princely remedy for old laborers, especially gardeners.” Many of us, who have spent some hours bent over our hopeful flower beds on a damp spring day can relate to the difficulty of trying to straighten up again!

Some of Bellis’ other guiding symptoms are vertigo in the elderly, headaches or varicose veins accompanied by a bruised, sore feeling and muscular pain along the front of the thighs.

Bryonia Wild Hops

When stress turns your playful buddy into an irritable bear, you might enjoy this one.  Bryonia was given the nicknames ‘grumpy bear’ and ‘hangover’ remedy because it helps conditions that do not want to be spoken to, bothered or moved in any way.

Bryonia relieves ailments that approach slowly, linger too long
and may result from being chilled when overheated or from fast weather changes. It has earned much fame by relieving intense, bursting, frontal headaches that may build to cover the whole head and do not want to be moved or jarred in any way. They feel best when buried under a pillow in a dark room. These headaches accompany most Bryonia ailments.

Its ‘keynote’ symptom ‘pain worse from slightest movement’ apply best to its swollen, red, hot joints aching from arthritis or sprains. These joint applications are very like Apis but are not shiny and pain is more stitching than stinging. It can be a wonder for stitching pain and stiffness in the small of the back and in the neck. Most Bryonia pains find relief in applied pressure or lying on the painful side.

Bryonia best applies to reliable, tidy individuals who are driven to succeed by a need for financial security. If their effort fails, grumpy irritability and sadness can dominate. They approach life and work methodically without letting emotions get in the way.  With a little Bryonia, grumpy bears can return to their playful antics in a very short time.

Rhus Tox Poison Oak

For all the individuals plagued by this plant’s nasty summer rashes, take solace in that poison ivy’s remedy can relieve much more– skin rashes, joint pain, various inflammatory symptoms and flu/fevers
included.

Rhus’ ability to ease joints with tearing rheumatic pains swelling, redness, sprains, stiffness, etc., further extols the value of this plant’s existence. It earned the title “Rusty Gate Remedy” by relieving joint and back pain that hurts on initial movement but improves after limbering up - just like an old gate

squeaks at first but quiets down after a bit. Also like the rusty gate, these joints do not like cold damp weather - they can be great storm predictors. For back relief, Rhus specializes in strain or injury, stiff necks, lower back pain, lumbago, even sciatica, that feel better lying on a hard surface, walking or bending backwards. Similar joint pain shows up in Rhus’ flu or fever along with a dry swollen throat, hoarseness, chills and much weariness and fatigue.

Rhus’ mental symptoms include extreme restlessness, anxiety, a sense of helplessness, withholding of emotions, desire for fresh, but not cold, air and much distress at night. Sleep may be disturbed by dreams of exertion, a feeling of some unknown threat, general restlessness, and a desire to stretch. It applies best to chilly individuals very sensitive to cold conditions. All its symptoms are better with heat, hot bathing and dry weather, and worse at night and with damp cold.

Knowing when to take which joint remedy frustrates even the most informed. But if you capture the keys you will do well: Ruta - weakness, repeated injury; Caulophyllum - small joints, erratic pain; Apis - red, swollen, shiny, burning; Ledum - cold better with cold; Bryonia - small joints worse with movement; Silica, Calc phos and Calc fluor - weakness needing general support... The list goes on and on, but if stiff and restless, try your Rhus tox.  You, too, will be thanking this menace of the forest floor.

Aconite nap Monkshood

Aconite’s most common application may be cold prevention, but its ability to minimize the negative responses to physical and emotional shocks make it critical for first aid. When fear and anxiety threaten
to induce panic following an accident or trauma, Aconite can steady the nerves and help you address the situation. To define Aconite’s pain applications, we can turn to books like Robin Murphy’s Homeopathic Remedy Guide, for insights such as “The key word in Aconite cases is “tension”. There is emotional and mental , tension of the systemic vessels, as in the effects of a chill, muscular tension, tension of involuntary muscles, even the breath can become tense and tight. Aconite is known as one of the great pain remedies... Pains are intolerable...tearing, cutting, are attended by restlessness...There can also be a sense of chilliness down the back that could be accompanied by numbness, stiffness, and pain and/or crawling and tingling sensations, as if bruised. Whenever anger, shocking news, night frights, exams or even getting stuck in an elevator or lost in a crowd, induce a state of panic, Aconite calms the nerves and
minimizes the latent physical and mental effects. Keys to look for are sudden, intense responses, tingling and/or burning sensations and a flushed face that becomes pale on standing. Though generally a remedy for the first 24 - 48 hours, Aconite has helped complaints that started after a previous panicky situation.

When do you choose Aconite or Arnica first after an accident? Arnica is stunned but says something like, “no, I’m fine, don’t touch me,” while Aconite is restless and more apt to say, “help me, I’m scared.” Both remedies have a place in every first aid kit and birth bag.

Mag Phos Magnesium Phosphate

Back spasms and leg cramps can be a gardener’s primary opponent without Mag phos around. If you feel tight, tense, in a knot, then think Mag phos, and relax. When things go awry, the strong weaken, the studious grow drowsy, the pains radiate, the muscles tense, the nerves spasm, etc., that’s when you know the body needs Mag phos. An imbalance in our magnesium causes nerves and muscles to get out of
sync. They cramp, spasm and shoot off pains. An imbalance in phosphates disturbs our vitality causing anxiety, forgetfulness, and confused thinking. Since magnesium phosphate is the compound bodies
need in muscle, nerve, brain, spinal marrow and tooth tissue, this remedy can work wonders to those in pain. You know the relief you feel when you relax a tight fist? That is the relaxation this remedy brings to tense muscles, cramps and neuralgic pain.

Muscle spasm and nerve symptoms as diverse as leg cramps, spasmodic coughs, abdominal pain/colic, flatulent colic, hiccups, toothache, teething pain, stabbing headaches and sciatica yield to this cell salt’s soothing touch. Mag phos aids many spasmodic
conditions in which nerves and muscles cannot cooperate: charley horses and other leg cramps, back spasms, menstrual cramps before and during cycle, musician’s and writer’s cramp, hiccups, colic, and in
certain cases, bedwetting.  Except for burning pain, most forms of neuralgia need Mag phos as well, particularly radiating, stabbing or shooting pains including: backache, right sided sciatica, facial neuralgia, tics, twitches, toothache, neuralgic right sided ear pain, neuritis and injured or weary nerves.

Now for the big IF: an important key to Mag phos’ relief is better for heat and worse for cold. This is so strong that many recommend a sip or two of hot water immediately after taking the remedy to speed its action. If a hot bath, hot tea, and a warm bed sound like paradise, you might get there with Mag phos.

Some Other Pain-Friendly Remedies

MuscleAches/Cramps #44 - Arnica, Bryonia, Cimicifuga, Mag phos, Rhus tox, Ruta grav

Keynotes: Leg cramps, Muscle pain, Cramping, Spasms, Sprains

Muscle aches are only the beginning of this remedy’s pain relief. Arnica, the #1 first aid remedy, aids bruised sore muscles following injury, overexertion or sprains. Arnica’s backup when joints are injured is Bryonia. It soothes aching joints and muscles, stiff lower backs, rheumatic joints and chest muscles aching under a hard Bryonia cough. Cimicifuga aids numbness, aching and muscular soreness in the
limbs, cramping pain in the calves (especially with periods) and rheumatic pain in the chest and large muscles. Magnesium phos also covers muscle cramps and charley horses or cramping pain anywhere, plus the soreness after cramps. Though more known for joint pain, Rhus tox relieves tearing sore muscles from rheumatism or sprains. The tendon and muscle remedy, Ruta grav, works with sprains, injured joints and out-of-whack backs. Whether you are planning to jog ten miles or stroll through the park on a wet chilly day, #44 can be a
great companion.

Hyland’sLeg Cramps Ointment - Aconite, Arnica, Ledum pal, Mag. phos, Rhus tox, Viscum alb

A traditional formula in a non-greasy base. This ointment works quickly to relieve cramps and pains in the legs and calves while warming the affected area.

Muscular - Tissue I - Ferr phos, Kali sulph, Mag phos

Keynotes: Muscleache, Spasms, Cramps, Sprains

This trio is the one-two-three of muscles. For muscular first aid, Ferr phos (iron phosphate) helps assure good oxygen delivery which keeps muscles strong and controls inflammation on sprains and
strains. Without Kali sulph (potassium sulphate), the oxygen cannot get from the blood to the tissue. It is also the anti-friction salt to keep muscles sliding smoothly. Without Mag phos (magnesium phosphate), our muscles and the nerves that guide them cannot communicate coherently because the white nerve fibers cannot relax, so we get painful spasms and charley horses. That concludes your
class in Muscles 101.

Watch out for “Fat Wallet Syndrome”

A more-common-than-you-think cause of back-pain can be the habitual carrying of thick wallets in a rear pocket! If you’re sitting a fair amount, the imbalance can cause you’re lower back to cry out for attention.  An easy solution is to transfer your personal effects to a jacket pocket, another is to get rid of some of the excess receipts, family photos and business cards that accumulate.

Fat Wallet Syndrome is becoming an official term in Orthopedic Medicine and in books like Steven Subotnick’s, Sports & Exercise Injuries.
