Mother Goat Recovers!
First I want to tell you that I raise goats for milk mostly, though sometimes
one goes to meat. Second, I want to tell you that a goat is not a horse or
cow or pig and most vets do not differentiate. This is what led me to
homeopathy for their treatment for lack of any other source. Most of the
goat folks use anitbiotics, DMSO, banmine, and many home remedies. My choice
is homeopathy, first and last. The story I want to tell is about my old doe,
who was 8 years old when I got her and her daughter. This is fairly old for
a goat and she was due to kid the end of March, 2006. As fate would have it,
there was a freak Florida frost the day into the night of her kidding. She
seemed all right at first, with three kids totalling 30 pounds. It was more
than she had ever kidded before so I was watching her as the day progressed
into a very cold night. She went down so fast, I couldn't believe it. At
4:30 she was up and by 6:00 she was prostrate on the barn floor. Her temp
was 108, high even for a goat, her respirations were rattling both in and out and she
had an effortless diarrhea as she coughed unproductively. This was the
supreme leader of this little herd and woe unto any goat that didn't move
to let her pass. Using this I started with a Phos 12c which didn't do much
as I watched for another hour. Next I went to 30c and she perked enough to
drink some water then went back down. I repeated this remedy at about 20
minute intervals and she responded, briefly. It was really cold in the barn
as I sat in a lawn chair wrapped in sweats and a blanket. She was still
rattling and temp stayed at 108 so I decided I didn't want to be bottle
feeding these three babies until weaning. The vet would have come and given
banamine, with a repeat dose, and an antibiotic with several repeat doses and a
very large bill. I would be guaranteed to be bottle feeding these kids and
probably lose the doe as well. Given that the Phos seemed to be working,
just not long enough, I went rummaging in my ancient pharmacopea of remedies and
found Phos 200c and gave it to her. It was close to midnight by now and looked like a
long night ahead. It took about 15 minutes and I watched as she staggered to
her feet calling her babies and fed them leaning against the wall, then
collapsed, stretched out and rattling again. I gave her the Phos 200c again
and as there was not much else to do but wait, I dozed off. I woke later
with a start, wondering where I was and why I was so cold. It came to me
quickly, as I realized there was no sound from this old doe who lived for
her kids. She was lying so still, I started to cry and reached out to pat
her good-by, the hole was already dug. Instead she threw up her head and
rose to her feet and stretched, then called her babies, fed them and came to
sniff me and figure out what I was doing there. I was crying still, but now
with joy. I had seen some pretty speedy recoveries with homeopathy, but none
that bordered on the miraculous as hers seemed. There was nothing necessary
for follow up. She was eating and milking like nothing had happened and the kids didn't have to get bottles from me.
