Homeopathy for bug bites and stings
Homeopathic Remedies for Bug Bites and Stings
For most of us, spring and summer mean more time outdoors. Whether you're camping, hiking, fishing or simply spending time in the backyard, it's prime season for bug bites and stings. I was reminded of this just the other night when my 6 year old daughter was stung under the ear on her cheek. Fortunately, the story ends very well. An oral dose of Apis, and one application of Hyland's Bug Bite Ointment stopped the tears instantly, and reduced the redness and stinging pain in short order. While Apis and Bug Bite Ointment saved our evening, there are several homeopathic remedies to help with insect bites and stings.
For more insight we call on details from the book, The American Institute of Homeopathy Handbook for Parents, by Edward Shalts, MD, DHt.
Aconite - While not a remedy often considered for insect bites and rashes, Dr. Shalts suggests it first in certain cases, "I've seen cases when a child stung by a bee gets so scared that the need for Aconitum is obvious. Use it if your child is scared, red faced and has an expression of terror...
Then to remedy the sting:
Apis mel - "Use this remedy if the area of a sting is swollen, red, warm to the touch and the condition is made better by cold. ... I've seen cases of allergic reactions to bee stings that almost instantly respond to Apis." Swelling and irritation after "stings from other insects responds similarly well.
... A dose of 30C is good... If there's an initial, but not a complete, improvement, repeat the dose two more times at thirty- to- sixty minute intervals. Stop giving doses sooner if the child is more than 50 percent better."
Ledum pal - "Frequently, the bites of wasps and other large insects require Ledum, but not always." Whether dealing with large insect bites or animal bites, this is the bite master remedy. "A main indication is that the area of the bite or sting is reddish blue and surrounded by a very pale area. The wound is also cold to the touch. Paradoxically, ice-cold applications bring about a dramatic improvement although the areas of the bite are cold."
Urtica urens - If planning to comb exotic beaches, or if scratching feels too good to stop, "this remedy is used for stings of jellyfish and medusa. It's also used for any other type of insect bites or stings in which the main symptoms are hives and itching that get better from rubbing."
